The new mac pro 2019 debuted on June 3rd in the San Jose Convention Center and all were excited to behold “the cheese-grate mac”, as it’s now being unofficially dubbed.
There are many pros to the new Mac Pro, and at the end of the day there’s really no free picnic. All good things must come at a cost! There are some nice hardware improvements and, as you will soon see, there are some Apple fans who altogether don’t think that the new Mac Pro is worth the money. The Price
Hollywood visual effects designers are jumping for joy with the release of the new 2019 Mac Pro. Not for its nearly $6,000 base model price tag, but at its enhanced ability to interpolate video with better ease while not overheating. Grant Petty, CEO and founder of Blackmagic Design, is recently quoted as saying that current movie creators literally just push their machines as hard as they will go until the machines max out and that this dictates the maximum level of visual effects that we’re able to see in our movies. “They’ve basically done everything wanted, and more,” said Petty. Though the price tag seems unfathomable at $6,000, it turns out that many Hollywood Mac Pros are upgraded for video processing to the tune of nearly six times that amount, if you can wrap your head around that for a minute. That’s essentially like the price of a brand new car or a down payment on a house.
Styling
Last model’s build of the Mac Pro was pretty epic with the cylindrical black shape, and many Apple consumers were in love with the design. Apple has chosen to take a decidedly different path in a move which may polarize the Mac Pro community. This more traditional box design is something which plays it safe by appeasing diehard Mac fans, while still maintaining its modernity through the cheese-grate flair design.
Features
The base model is an 3.5GHz 8-core Intel Xeon W processor with 32GB of RAM and just 256 gigs of SSD. This is extendable up to a 28-core with 1.5TB of DDR4 ECC across 12 DIMM slots. (Side Note: this doesn’t include a monitor, of which Apple’s new Pro Display XDR would set you back another cool $5,000). The base model uses an AMD Radeon Pro 580X, while advanced models utilize the Radeon Pro Vega II and Vega II Duo. It comes with eight PCI expansion slots, a ProRes or ProRes RAW accelerator card, and can be configured to hold up to 4TB of storage; Its size is 17.7” L x 8.58” W x 20.8” H, weighing 39.7 pounds.
Conclusion
Though it can handle three 8K workflows simultaneously and costs $2,000 less than older models, a build of similar specs to the base model Mac Pro on a Windows machine would cost a fraction of the price at just $2,000. From this, you could spend a day converting it into a Hackintosh and use the money to splurge on a nice vacation. But diehard fans who just have to have the latest gear the 2019 Mac Pro is a Hollywood-level professional machine that seems to negate any overheating issues that Mac Pros once had.
